Staff continuity is of prime importance with any charity seeking long-term relationships with major donors. My challenge is that I was experiencing nearly 100% turnover of my major gift department within an 18 month period. We discussed this challenge and I came to realize one of the rules I was living by professionally – that is to say, “hire the best and get the heck out of the way” – was based on the false notion that my best performers didn’t need my time or attention.
I started to work out a weekly plan in which several key conversations with individuals or groups were planned out so I could spend time with my star employees discussing both professional and personal issues. I have been working with Jeff for 3 years. Prior to that, I was operating blind. I didn’t understand where I wanted to be and what it took to get there. Always operating day-to-day and accomplishing the ‘firefighting’ very well, but not operating strategically.
What Coach Jeff has done for me was think strategically as well as operationally. We identified “things” in 6 major areas of our life and business and narrowed those down to things that were the most important and actually schedule, over the next 90-days what needed to be done. We’d also have a 1 year, 3 year and 5-year plan in place, with some of those items in motion. We’d reconvene 90-days later and determine what was accomplished, what wasn’t (and why), then re-evaluate and schedule those new tasks.
In the last 3 years, my business has doubled each year – almost tripling last year. Pre-Corona, we were (and actually are still) on track to double again. The insight I had allowed me to plan and execute that growth with minimal staff or changes to our costs. It allowed me to prioritize my time better and focus on 1-day, 1-week, 1-month, etc. tasks to propel growth. Now that we are ramping up costs, mainly payroll, I have a clear idea of our profitability, our growth strategy and what to do to get there.
Had I had Jeff when I owned the recycling company, I’d still own it! I wish I had that level of insight into the real importance of planning then – and it came solely and directly from working with Jeff. I know you’ll be busy, but I think if you start in, you’ll be amazed the clarity you gain.
